Lionel Messi shines as Argentina, defeats France

FIFA World Cup 2022, Argentina vs. France: Following a nail-biting 120-minute match that ended 3-3, Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties to win their third World Cup in 36 years.

The Albiceleste are regarded as one of the most accomplished countries in world football today, despite not always being the giants of the game that neighbouring Brazil was in the early years of the FIFA World Cup. This is due to the Albiceleste’s rise to power in the 1970s and 1980s.

Argentina has given the world some of football’s finest players thanks to legends like Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.

Argentina is now regarded as one of the most powerful and intimidating nations in international football, with many of its players playing for top teams around the globe and a fervent and worldwide fan base.

Argentina has won how many World Cups?

Argentina’s three FIFA World Cup victories rank third in the world, behind Brazil’s five, Germany, and Italy’s four, and Argentina’s three.

As hosts in 1978, La Albiceleste won their first World Cup championship. When Mexico hosted the 1986 World Cup, Diego Maradona led Argentina to victory, giving them their second championship. The infamous “Hand of God” goal from this tournament helped Argentina defeat England in the quarterfinals.

In the championship game against the Netherlands, Kempes scored first after 38 minutes. The Netherlands responded in the 82nd minute to force extra time, but Kempes scored again in the 105th minute to win the game 3-1. The game was overshadowed by controversy when Argentina’s pregame tactics to delay the Netherlands upset them, but the hosts ultimately won.

FIFA World Cup of 1986

Due to Colombia’s financial difficulties, the tournament—which was originally scheduled to take place there—instead took place in Mexico. Diego Maradona, who was a standout in the competition and helped Argentina win the World Cup, would enthrall Mexico.

Argentina won Group A and moved on to the knockout stage, with just a 1-1 tie with Italy marring the group play. In the first two knockout stage games, the Albiceleste defeated both Uruguay and England by a single goal. The “Hand of God” goal in the match against England, in which Maradona leapt to head the ball on frame but it instead struck his hand and went into the goal without being noticed by the official as the goal stood, made the game legendary.

A brace from Maradona helped Argentina defeat Belgium 2-0 in the semifinals, and while the legendary player was kept off the scoresheet in the championship match against Germany by Lothar Matthaus’s tenacious defending, it created opportunities for his teammates. Maradona’s brilliant assist set up Jorge Burruchaga’s 86th-minute winner, giving Argentina a 3-2 victory and their second FIFA World Cup title.

FIFA World Cup 2022

With Messi scoring two goals and Mbappé scoring a hat trick, Argentina won its third World Cup title by defeating France 4-2 on penalties following a 3-3 draw. This was likely the wildest final in the tournament’s 92-year history.

The first penalties were converted by Messi and Mbappé for their respective teams. Gonzalo Montiel had the opportunity to end the game after Aurelien Tchouameni of France missed a shot from Kingsley Coman. A riot of cheers broke out after he converted the penalty to the left.

It had been four consecutive World Cup wins for Europe since 2006, but that streak ended this year. Last year, Brazil won the South American championship, which was jointly hosted by Japan and South Korea in Asia.

It was Argentina’s first significant prize since 1993 when it triumphed in Qatar last year in the Copa America. It’s a thrilling conclusion to Messi’s international career, which is still ongoing. After the game, he declared that he will keep competing for his country.

US Fighter Jets Shoot Down Octagonal Object Near Canadian Border

US Fighter Jets

The Pentagon has reported that US fighter jets have shot down an unidentified flying object in the Midwest, near the Canadian border. The object was flying at an altitude of 20,000 feet and posed no military threat, however, it may have interfered with domestic air traffic. A statement by Pentagon spokesperson, Patrick Ryder, noted that the incident was the latest in a series of similar events, including a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that raised security concerns in North America.

The Pentagon reported that a third unidentified flying object was shot down over North America in just three days, and the fourth in a week. The object was brought down over Lake Huron on the US-Canada border at 2:42 pm local time on February 13th, according to a statement by the Pentagon. The recent activity of defence has been sparked by the appearance of a white balloon that was spotted over the US in late January. The balloon hovered over the country for days, leading the US to suspect it was a Chinese surveillance balloon.

On February 4th, fighter jets brought the balloon down off the coast of South Carolina. The latest object that was shot down appeared to have an octagonal structure, with strings hanging from it but no clear payload, as reported by an official to the press.

The object, detected near military sites in Montana, led to the closure of US airspace by the Pentagon due to its proximity to sensitive sites.

General Glen VanHerck, head of the US Air Force responsible for securing US airspace, informed the media that the military was unable to identify the nature, source, or means of staying aloft for the three recent unidentified objects.

General VanHerck, who is in charge of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and Northern Command, stated that they referred to the objects as “objects” and not balloons for a specific reason. He added that he wouldn’t exclude any explanation, including the possibility of extraterrestrial involvement.

Legislators are calling for more information regarding the objects that have been shot down. US legislator Debbie Dingell, among other Michigan lawmakers, has stated the need to know the origin, purpose, and reason for the increase in the frequency of these objects.

Heino Klinck, a former US deputy assistant secretary of defence for East Asia, believes the government should be more transparent about these incursions. Klinck mentioned that the challenge for the government is to release information without compromising sources and methods, but it is high time for them to say something. The latest object was first detected over Montana on Saturday evening but was initially thought to be an anomaly.

However, it was detected again on Sunday over the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, moving over Lake Huron. US and Canadian authorities restricted airspace over the lake as fighters were scrambled to intercept and identify the object. Meanwhile, Canadian authorities are searching for the wreckage of the object shot down over the Yukon region.

US Plans to End Public Health Emergency for Covid in May

US Plans To End Public Health Emergency For Covid In May

The Biden administration has announced its plan to end the coronavirus public health emergency in May, signaling a shift in the perception of the pandemic’s severity. The expiration of the emergency will bring both symbolic and practical changes, as millions of Americans have received free Covid tests, treatments and vaccines that may not be available without cost after the emergency ends.

The White House intends to keep the emergency in place for a few more months to provide adequate time for hospitals, health care providers, and health officials to prepare for the changes that will come with its end.

Although Covid-19 is still taking an average of over 500 lives daily in the US, about double the number of deaths during a severe flu season, the pandemic is no longer disrupting daily life to the same extent it once did. This is due, in part, to the increasing number of people who have received vaccinations or have developed some level of protection from prior infections.

The White House is committed to an orderly transition out of the public health emergency. Additionally, the administration intends to let a separate declaration of a national emergency expire on the same day, May 11.

The White House has warned against the sudden end of the emergency declarations, stating that it could result in widespread chaos and uncertainty across the healthcare system. The statement highlights the potential impact on states, hospitals, doctors’ offices, and most importantly, millions of Americans.

The White House emphasized the importance of an orderly transition to minimize disruption to the healthcare system and to ensure that the needs of all stakeholders are addressed. The message serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic and the need for continued vigilance and preparation to manage its impact on public health and the healthcare system.

The White House statement was released prior to a planned vote in the House on a bill named the “Pandemic Is Over Act,” which aims to end the public health emergency immediately. The Republican-led House is scheduled to discuss several pandemic-related measures this week. The White House’s statement serves as a response to the proposed bill, as well as another bill aimed at ending the national emergency.

The disagreement between the White House and House Republicans indicates a likely prolonged political dispute over the administration’s handling of the pandemic. Republicans aim to criticize the Biden administration for excessive spending in response to the coronavirus crisis. Representative Steve Scalise, a Republican from Louisiana and the Majority Leader, has called on the Biden administration to end the emergency declaration immediately instead of waiting until May 11. Scalise believes that the Biden administration has used the Covid crisis as a cover to waste taxpayer dollars on unrelated policies.

However, the White House claims that it is the federal Covid policies, including free tests, treatments, and vaccines, that have improved the control of the pandemic. The officials have reported that Covid was the third leading cause of death from 2020 to mid-2022, but is no longer among the top five killers.

In conclusion, the decision to end the coronavirus public health emergency marks a significant turning point in the pandemic, reflecting the administration’s confidence in the progress made in controlling its spread. However, it also brings with it the challenge of ensuring a smooth transition that addresses the impact of the emergency on the healthcare system and its stakeholders.

Boeing’s 747, The Original Jumbo Jet, Prepares for Final Send-Off

The Boeing 747, affectionately known as the “Jumbo Jet” and “Queen of the Skies,” has revolutionized air travel for over five decades. However, its reign as the largest commercial passenger airplane has come to an end, with the final delivery of the freighter version being handed over to Atlas Air on Tuesday. The 747’s iconic design, featuring a distinctive hump on its silhouette, made its debut in the 1960s in response to the growing demand for mass travel.

The first twin-aisle wide-body jetliner offered luxury on its upper deck and nose, but it was its ability to accommodate a large number of passengers that truly transformed air travel. Bruce Dickinson, lead singer of Iron Maiden and former 747 pilot, describes the airplane as stately and imposing on the ground, yet surprisingly agile in the air. Despite its retirement from commercial passenger service, the 747 remains a beloved symbol of a bygone era of air travel.

The Boeing 747, nicknamed the “Jumbo Jet” and “Queen of the Skies,” transformed air travel, making it affordable for the middle class. Air France-KLM CEO Ben Smith notes that prior to the 747, the average family couldn’t affordably fly from the U.S. to Europe.

The 747 played a significant role in global affairs, serving as the “Doomsday Plane” for the U.S. and chartered for papal visits as “Shepherd One.” Today, two previously delivered 747s are being fitted to replace U.S. presidential jets known as Air Force One.

Linda Freier, a former Pan Am flight attendant, recalls the incredible diversity of passengers on the 747, including well-dressed individuals and those who spent everything they had on a ticket. When the first 747 took flight on January 22, 1970, it doubled plane capacity to 350-400 seats, drastically altering airport design.

The 747 was known as the “aircraft for the people” due to its ability to bring air travel to the masses. Aviation historian Max Kingsley-Jones states that the 747 was a game-changer across all aspects of the aviation industry. The story behind the 747’s birth is steeped in aviation mythology.

The founder of Pan Am, Juan Trippe, wanted to reduce costs by increasing the number of seats. During a fishing trip, Trippe challenged Boeing President William Allen to create an aircraft that exceeded the 707. Allen put legendary engineer Joe Sutter in charge of the project and Sutter’s team, nicknamed “the Incredibles,” took only 28 months to develop the 747, which made its first flight on February 9, 1969.

Policing Experts Assess The Beating of Tyre Nichols

Tyre Nichols

Police training experts who reviewed the videos of the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, Tennessee, said that they believed there was no justification for the actions of the police officers involved. These officers have been charged with crimes including second-degree murder in Nichols’ death. The footage, which is almost an hour long and comes from both police body cameras and street cameras, shows officers beating, kicking, and using a baton against Nichols after he fled a traffic stop. The experts stated that the officers’ actions were not in line with the proper protocol for handling a suspect who is fleeing or resisting arrest. They further added that the use of excessive force and violence in this situation was completely unjustified.

According to Obayashi, a police training expert, the footage of the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols in Memphis is worse than the Rodney King case. He added that in police training, officers are repeatedly reminded to be aware of their physical surroundings, but the same stress should be placed on awareness of their own emotions. If officers’ tempers run high, they are bound to make mistakes. In the Nichols confrontation, it is possible the officers felt disrespected when their directions weren’t followed, he said. Obayashi is also a deputy sheriff and policy adviser in the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office in California. He further added that officers should be trained to handle situations where a suspect does not follow their directions, without resorting to excessive force or violence.

Obayashi, a police training expert, said that the incident involving the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols in Memphis appears to be a case of “classic contempt of cop,” in which officers take revenge on an individual for not following their directions. Chuck Wexler, the executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, an organization that studies the improvement of policing, also commented on the incident. He said that the officers’ behavior in the incident fell short in multiple ways. He added that in modern policing, officers are usually trained to communicate clearly with an individual and respond proportionally to their actions. However, in this incident, the officers neither communicated clearly nor responded proportionally, Wexler said.

Wexler, the executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, called the incident “the definition of excessive force.” He said that Nichols did not present a danger that matched the force the officers used, beyond appearing not to want to be arrested. Additionally, even when Nichols was lying on the ground, none of the officers attempted to help him, which Wexler said was a violation of their duty to render aid. These actions by the officers shows the clear breach of use of excessive force, and violation of basic human rights and duty of care towards the individual.
