Republicans are Endangering American Democracy, According to Biden

On Wednesday night, President Joe Biden strongly denounced his predecessor and other Republicans for supporting political violence, voter intimidation, and “the Big Lie,” positioning the upcoming elections as a crucial test of American democracy.

While candidates and voters have been concentrating on economic and other issues, Biden attempted to use a nationally televised evening speech to put the future of the country’s electoral system front and center for the final days of debate before midterm elections Tuesday that will determine control of Congress and a number of state offices.

At Union Station, just a few blocks from the Capitol, where a mob stormed the building on January 6, 2021, to obstruct the transfer of power, Biden said: “As I stand here today, there are candidates running for every level of office in America — for governor, Congress, attorney general, secretary of state — who won’t commit, they won’t commit to accepting the results of the elections that they’re running in.” “America is heading down a path to disaster. It’s unheard of. It’s forbidden. It’s also not American.

The violent attack on Paul Pelosi on Friday by a man brandishing a hammer and yelling obscenities reminiscent of those yelled by rioters on January 6 seemed to particularly unnerve the president, who also appeared visibly shaken.

Biden linked the incident to former President Donald Trump’s “Big Lie” that the 2020 election was rigged.

According to Biden, “it’s a fiction that has fuelled a worrisome escalation in political violence and voter intimidation over the past two years.” The president singled out Trump’s efforts days prior to the attack to persuade Georgia’s Republican secretary of state to “find” him enough votes to change the outcome of the election in that state, citing instances of election workers being harassed and threatened.

The result of lies told for power and profit, lies of conspiracy and malice, lies repeated time and time again to generate a cycle of anger, hate, vitriol, and even violence, according to Biden, are intimidation and violence against Democrats, Republicans, and nonpartisan officials who are simply doing their jobs. We need to tackle those lies with the truth right now. Our country’s very future depends on it.

Although Biden would not mention Trump by name, he maintained that his predecessor had undermined the rule of law. Because the defeated former president of the United States won’t accept the results of the 2020 election, Biden declared that “American democracy is under attack.” “He won’t acknowledge the popular will.

He will not concede that he was defeated. He has exploited his position of authority, put his own loyalty ahead of that to the Constitution, and made a big lie the tenet of the MAGA Republicans, a small portion of that party.

He mentioned how the courts and other authorities have rejected Trump’s phoney assertions. Every single time, the Massive Lie has been shown to be just that—a big lie—Biden stated. However, hardline MAGA Republicans now seek to cast doubt on the legitimacy of current and next elections as well.

In either case, voters were much more likely to rank inflation, the economy, and other issues above the future of democracy. In fact, a New York Times/Siena College poll found that 12% of Democrats and more than 35% of independent voters said they were willing to back candidates who challenged the validity of the 2020 election.

Biden nearly appeared to be battling with those people who, in his opinion, weren’t placing enough value on election integrity. He acknowledged the significance of Medicare, Social Security, and other issues, but said that “democracy itself is also at risk.” “We can’t assume it will just solve itself,” he continued.
