The “Steel Man of India,” Jamshed J. Irani, Passes Away at Age 86

Dr. Jamshed J. Irani, also referred to as “The Steel Man of India,” passed away on Monday night in Jamshedpur at the age of 86.

The Tata Steel family sends its sincere condolences to the man’s family and close friends in a tweet from its official account.

Dr. Irani, a Padma Bhushan recipient, had a career spanning more than 40 years and had held the position of director at various Tata Group firms. What you need to know about him is provided here as the nation laments his passing.

  1. In Nagpur, India, on June 2, 1936, Dr. Jamshed J. Irani was born. He graduated with a BSc in Science from the Nagpur University’s Science College in 1956, and two years later, in 1958, he earned an MSc in Geology.
  2. Later, Irani studied metallurgy at the University of Sheffield in the UK where he earned a master’s degree in 1960 and a PhD in 1963. He attended the university as a JN Tata scholar.
  3. The British Iron and Steel Research Association was where Dr. Irani started his professional career. Returning to India, he worked as the director-in-charge of research and development’s assistant at the Tata Iron and Steel Company (now known as Tata Steel) until he returned to the country in 1968.
  4. Dr. Irani joined Tata Steel as President in 1985 after serving as general superintendent in 1978, general manager in 1979, and general manager in 1980. Before retiring in 2001, he later rose to the positions of managing director and joint managing director in 1988 and 1992, respectively.
  5. From 2001 to 2005, Dr. Jamshed J. Irani was a non-executive director for Tata Steel and a member of the board. Tata Motors and Tata Teleservices are just two of the companies in the Tata Group for which he served as a director.
  6. From 1992 to 1993, Dr. Irani served as the Confederation of Indian Industry’s national president. For his contributions to industry, he received a number of honors, including the Padma Bhushan in 2007.

In recognition of his contributions to the field of metallurgy, Dr. Irani also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Government of India in 2008. As a visionary leader who led Tata Steel from the front during India’s economic liberalization in the early 1990s and significantly aided the expansion and development of the steel sector in India, he would be sadly missed, according to Tata Steel.
