On Sunday, nearly 300 domestic and international flights at the Manila airport in the Philippines were disrupted due to a power outage that affected air traffic operations. The incident caused inconvenience for over 65,000 passengers during the New Year holiday. Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista apologized for the disruption and stated that authorities are working to assist all affected passengers. The issue began in the morning when the Air Traffic Management Center, which is responsible for overseeing all flights in Philippine airspace, lost communication, radio, radar, and internet due to the power outage. The air traffic system was restored in the late afternoon, and flights resumed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila. Officials expect full recovery within 72 hours and have requested that airlines mount additional flights and upgrade to wider planes to accommodate more passengers.
Tycoon Manny Pangilinan, chairman of telecommunication company PLDT, was one such traveler who was affected by the power outage. Pangilinan was on his way to Manila from Tokyo when the incident occurred and was forced to return to Haneda after three hours of flying. He tweeted about the disruption, stating that the inconvenience to travelers and losses to tourism and business were “horrendous.”
Despite the initial disruption, the air traffic system was eventually restored in the late afternoon, and flights resumed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila. Officials have requested that airlines mount additional flights and upgrade to wider planes in order to accommodate more passengers and facilitate a full recovery, which is expected to take place within 72 hours. It is hoped that these measures will help alleviate some of the inconvenience caused by the power outage and allow for a smoother return to normal operations.
In the 2024 election, Donald Trump walked away with a crushing victory over Kamala Harris and snagged every critical swing-state. While polls signaled it would be a tight race, Harris ended up significantly underperforming Biden’s 2020 showing. Even in battleground states, her constantly changing campaign was rushed, which distracted voters from connecting with her.
The attacks made against Trump by the media only help his support to grow. Using alternative media, he was able to appeal to a lot of frustrated minority voters who were disillusioned with the Democrats. Her campaign was weaker to begin with, owing in part to Harris’s ambivalent stances compared to Trump and his known plans that included well-tailored appeal amongst minority populations. Harris showed just how deep societal divisions run when it comes to her identity, with some voters seeing that as a negative rather than the strength she intended.
If you guessed racing, well in the end it really wasn’t. He will sweep all — and better than Obama in ’08. He’s flying back to the White House! Though polls forecasted a close race, Harris underperformed in each county compared to Joe Biden. Trump stormed to victory in the US election, signaling an end of a liberal era which had begun with the Democrats’ domination America hailing from culture and politics stretching from media through Hollywood when Barack Obama won his first term as president back in 2008. Then came Trump, a criminal conviction cuff, who once danced to music at the rally and spoke in private cords about a golfer’s alleged romantic relationships. When Trump took office on January 20, 2017, he did more than just pose handcuffed with a criminal conviction. He is the first President since Grover Cleveland to serve non-consecutive terms after breaking through the so-called “Blue Wall”. Won large margins of minority voters who don’t usually vote for Democrats
1. No Time to Prepare
Launching a presidential campaign in just four months proved difficult, and Harris found it challenging to communicate her ideals alongside the Biden camp. There, more than just switching positions on the significant matters— such as illegal immigration and gender‐affirming care— she lost trust with voters.
2. Interview Doom Loop
Nominally she edged out Harris, at least in FiveThirtyEight’s polling average (+3.6 points), but Harris first rejected interviews. Silicon Valley investor David Sacks cautioned that she could become trapped in a “doom loop”: her ratings would drop, causing her to do more interviews, exacerbating the destruction of her poll numbers. It did, with her ratings nosediving from 3.6 to 1.4 points on the eve of Election Day. Time and time again during interviews she couldn’t even articulate what she’d do to be any different than Joe Biden.
3. MSM’s Trump Derangement Syndrome
While the media are supposed to inform the public, for the last eight years main stream has been waging war on Trump. They often twisted the truth, like when they misrepresented Trump’s comment on Liz Cheney as if she was threatening him on violence instead of just commenting about her a “war hawk.” The MSM reality distortation reached such a level of dissonance that huge parts of the country simply no longer believed anything they read. Even comedy shows went down the route of anti-Trump narratives, which became more a matter of repetition than balancing out information for critical discourse. Not even kidding, they also committed the worst crime of all time. Even the not very sane notion of journalistic neutrality was dominated by liberalism, with all mainstream media in effect switching sides and leaving that field open for people to go read X or other media instead due to the Trump Derangement Syndrome taking hold. A great moment for America’s mainstream media would be having its awakening about the enormous mismatch between reality and the alternative narrative they provide.
4. The Rise Of New Media
Once the mainstream media failed to put their finger on it, alternative platforms provided enough breathing room for people to assess Trump for themselves. With the assistance of platforms like X, owned by Trump ally Elon Musk, and outlets such as The Joe Rogan Experience — alongside some luck with time passing — Trump has been able to remake his image somewhat since leaving office and shed labels like “fascist” and “bigot. Today, when Joe Rogan is notable media figure who has the same effect as any major celebrity, Trump’s alternative media appearances have offset the damage wrought by traditional outlets and when people could not find dictator or fascist that MSM had warned them about after watching Trump for three hours on Rogan or with Andy Schulz on the Flagrant Podcast they get what happens now?
5. U-Turns on Major Policies and a “No Comment” Strategy
Kamala Harris’s indecisiveness on definite policy stances was detrimental. Without taking a clear stand on former progressive policies, she came across as evasive — and voters shunned her emit. She was also the No Comment candidate, leaving voters with fewer reasons to hate her than anyone else. It was, however, a rather tough sell. You can’t go claiming to be the champion of recreational marijuana use when your record involves locking up recreational marijuana users. In interview after interview, Harris was burdened by Biden’s policy positions and failed to explain how her regime would be any different. Conversely, Trump’s direct, if polarising, policy positions won him a loyal base, securing a clear victory. Harris’s avoidance left her vulnerable to attacks, with voters gravitating toward a candidate with a more defined agenda.
The Pentagon has reported that US fighter jets have shot down an unidentified flying object in the Midwest, near the Canadian border. The object was flying at an altitude of 20,000 feet and posed no military threat, however, it may have interfered with domestic air traffic. A statement by Pentagon spokesperson, Patrick Ryder, noted that the incident was the latest in a series of similar events, including a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that raised security concerns in North America.
The Pentagon reported that a third unidentified flying object was shot down over North America in just three days, and the fourth in a week. The object was brought down over Lake Huron on the US-Canada border at 2:42 pm local time on February 13th, according to a statement by the Pentagon. The recent activity of defence has been sparked by the appearance of a white balloon that was spotted over the US in late January. The balloon hovered over the country for days, leading the US to suspect it was a Chinese surveillance balloon.
On February 4th, fighter jets brought the balloon down off the coast of South Carolina. The latest object that was shot down appeared to have an octagonal structure, with strings hanging from it but no clear payload, as reported by an official to the press.
The object, detected near military sites in Montana, led to the closure of US airspace by the Pentagon due to its proximity to sensitive sites.
General Glen VanHerck, head of the US Air Force responsible for securing US airspace, informed the media that the military was unable to identify the nature, source, or means of staying aloft for the three recent unidentified objects.
General VanHerck, who is in charge of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and Northern Command, stated that they referred to the objects as “objects” and not balloons for a specific reason. He added that he wouldn’t exclude any explanation, including the possibility of extraterrestrial involvement.
Legislators are calling for more information regarding the objects that have been shot down. US legislator Debbie Dingell, among other Michigan lawmakers, has stated the need to know the origin, purpose, and reason for the increase in the frequency of these objects.
Heino Klinck, a former US deputy assistant secretary of defence for East Asia, believes the government should be more transparent about these incursions. Klinck mentioned that the challenge for the government is to release information without compromising sources and methods, but it is high time for them to say something. The latest object was first detected over Montana on Saturday evening but was initially thought to be an anomaly.
However, it was detected again on Sunday over the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, moving over Lake Huron. US and Canadian authorities restricted airspace over the lake as fighters were scrambled to intercept and identify the object. Meanwhile, Canadian authorities are searching for the wreckage of the object shot down over the Yukon region.
It has been reported that the President of the United States, Joe Biden, has extended an invitation to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, for a state visit this summer. The invitation has been accepted in principle, and both sides are now working on scheduling a mutually convenient date. Currently, the visit is in the early stages of logistical planning.
India is set to host a series of events in the lead-up to the G-20 summit in September. This includes several events aimed at showcasing the country’s progress and achievements. Given the significance of the G-20, the state visit by President Biden is expected to be a significant event that will highlight the strong partnership between the two countries.
The visit will also provide an opportunity for the two leaders to engage in discussions on a range of important issues, including trade, investment, and regional security. India and the United States share a strong relationship, built on shared values and mutual interests. The state visit will further strengthen this relationship and deepen the ties between the two nations.
The visit is expected to generate significant media coverage and will likely be seen as a significant event in the region. Both sides are expected to take advantage of the opportunity to highlight their respective achievements and to set the tone for future cooperation.
The state visit is expected to last for a minimum of a couple of days and will involve several key events such as a joint address to the US Congress and a state dinner at the White House. Prime Minister Modi has a busy schedule ahead, including participation in the G-20 summit, domestic and international commitments, and campaigning for state assembly elections later in the year.
Sources, who remain unnamed due to the sensitive nature of the matter and restrictions on discussing it publicly, have not disclosed the timing and messenger of President Biden’s invitation to Prime Minister Modi. Biden previously hosted French President Emmanuel Macron for his first state dinner in December.
A senior official from the Biden administration has stated that the President values the partnership between India and the United States, which is seen as critical for addressing global challenges and advancing shared interests.
In conclusion, the state visit by President Biden to India this summer is expected to be a significant event that will reinforce the strong partnership between the two countries and deepen the ties between their people. Both sides are working to ensure that the visit is a success and will contribute to the continued growth and prosperity of both nations.
The Biden administration has announced its plan to end the coronavirus public health emergency in May, signaling a shift in the perception of the pandemic’s severity. The expiration of the emergency will bring both symbolic and practical changes, as millions of Americans have received free Covid tests, treatments and vaccines that may not be available without cost after the emergency ends.
The White House intends to keep the emergency in place for a few more months to provide adequate time for hospitals, health care providers, and health officials to prepare for the changes that will come with its end.
Although Covid-19 is still taking an average of over 500 lives daily in the US, about double the number of deaths during a severe flu season, the pandemic is no longer disrupting daily life to the same extent it once did. This is due, in part, to the increasing number of people who have received vaccinations or have developed some level of protection from prior infections.
The White House is committed to an orderly transition out of the public health emergency. Additionally, the administration intends to let a separate declaration of a national emergency expire on the same day, May 11.
The White House has warned against the sudden end of the emergency declarations, stating that it could result in widespread chaos and uncertainty across the healthcare system. The statement highlights the potential impact on states, hospitals, doctors’ offices, and most importantly, millions of Americans.
The White House emphasized the importance of an orderly transition to minimize disruption to the healthcare system and to ensure that the needs of all stakeholders are addressed. The message serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic and the need for continued vigilance and preparation to manage its impact on public health and the healthcare system.
The White House statement was released prior to a planned vote in the House on a bill named the “Pandemic Is Over Act,” which aims to end the public health emergency immediately. The Republican-led House is scheduled to discuss several pandemic-related measures this week. The White House’s statement serves as a response to the proposed bill, as well as another bill aimed at ending the national emergency.
The disagreement between the White House and House Republicans indicates a likely prolonged political dispute over the administration’s handling of the pandemic. Republicans aim to criticize the Biden administration for excessive spending in response to the coronavirus crisis. Representative Steve Scalise, a Republican from Louisiana and the Majority Leader, has called on the Biden administration to end the emergency declaration immediately instead of waiting until May 11. Scalise believes that the Biden administration has used the Covid crisis as a cover to waste taxpayer dollars on unrelated policies.
However, the White House claims that it is the federal Covid policies, including free tests, treatments, and vaccines, that have improved the control of the pandemic. The officials have reported that Covid was the third leading cause of death from 2020 to mid-2022, but is no longer among the top five killers.
In conclusion, the decision to end the coronavirus public health emergency marks a significant turning point in the pandemic, reflecting the administration’s confidence in the progress made in controlling its spread. However, it also brings with it the challenge of ensuring a smooth transition that addresses the impact of the emergency on the healthcare system and its stakeholders.
The Boeing 747, affectionately known as the “Jumbo Jet” and “Queen of the Skies,” has revolutionized air travel for over five decades. However, its reign as the largest commercial passenger airplane has come to an end, with the final delivery of the freighter version being handed over to Atlas Air on Tuesday. The 747’s iconic design, featuring a distinctive hump on its silhouette, made its debut in the 1960s in response to the growing demand for mass travel.
The first twin-aisle wide-body jetliner offered luxury on its upper deck and nose, but it was its ability to accommodate a large number of passengers that truly transformed air travel. Bruce Dickinson, lead singer of Iron Maiden and former 747 pilot, describes the airplane as stately and imposing on the ground, yet surprisingly agile in the air. Despite its retirement from commercial passenger service, the 747 remains a beloved symbol of a bygone era of air travel.
The Boeing 747, nicknamed the “Jumbo Jet” and “Queen of the Skies,” transformed air travel, making it affordable for the middle class. Air France-KLM CEO Ben Smith notes that prior to the 747, the average family couldn’t affordably fly from the U.S. to Europe.
The 747 played a significant role in global affairs, serving as the “Doomsday Plane” for the U.S. and chartered for papal visits as “Shepherd One.” Today, two previously delivered 747s are being fitted to replace U.S. presidential jets known as Air Force One.
Linda Freier, a former Pan Am flight attendant, recalls the incredible diversity of passengers on the 747, including well-dressed individuals and those who spent everything they had on a ticket. When the first 747 took flight on January 22, 1970, it doubled plane capacity to 350-400 seats, drastically altering airport design.
The 747 was known as the “aircraft for the people” due to its ability to bring air travel to the masses. Aviation historian Max Kingsley-Jones states that the 747 was a game-changer across all aspects of the aviation industry. The story behind the 747’s birth is steeped in aviation mythology.
The founder of Pan Am, Juan Trippe, wanted to reduce costs by increasing the number of seats. During a fishing trip, Trippe challenged Boeing President William Allen to create an aircraft that exceeded the 707. Allen put legendary engineer Joe Sutter in charge of the project and Sutter’s team, nicknamed “the Incredibles,” took only 28 months to develop the 747, which made its first flight on February 9, 1969.
